A container for a home? That will not necessarily spark a lot of joy for most people. If they see these houses - made from shipping containers - that will all change. These shipping containers as tiny houses can be a solution to our housing problem. Another advantage: the plan is not only more sustainable but also allows you to build a house for half the price of a ‘normal’ home.

New Ideas For Sustainable Building

Rising house prices, scamming landlords, no space for new projects: the housing shortage is a real social problem. As the world’s (urban) population keeps on growing, we urgently need to look for solutions. Shipping containers as tiny houses can be an answer we are looking for: these metal boxes can be converted into fully functional homes. And the best part: the used shipping containers can be designed and turned into your dream house, even two-floored!

By modifying used shipping containers, a group of designers, builders, and architects have found a way to repurpose these metal materials. The estimated amount of unexploited shipping containers is over 20 million globally, which gives a lot of opportunities for this alternative house building. Other advantages: the versatility and the resistance to various weather conditions of these containers, and, of course, the reasonable price.

Shipping Containers Base Cost To Build Per Container

Millennials among us can probably confirm it is quite difficult to spend lots of money on something other than a huge mortgage - depending on where you live, of course. For this generation, a mortgage is almost impossible to dodge. These tiny houses made from sea containers are a solution for those that don´t want this kind of financial burden on their shoulders, as they are a lot more affordable than ´normal´ housing. Bottom line: you can have a simple house built for approximately $ 15,000 and pay around $ 250,000 for a more posh and luxurious home. A lot more affordable than ‘normal’ housing!

What size has a shipping container?
Shipping containers come in standard sizes, with surfaces of 15 m2 or 30 m2. The first will cost between $ 1000 and 2500 dollars: the second between 3150 dollars and $ 4000. Of course, the shipping container will need modifying to turn it into a home. Additional costs that you have to take into account are labor costs and costs for adaptations to build a container home, which will be around 13,000 dollars. If you compare the above prices with a matching but 'normal' house, you will pay a considerable cheaper price for a shipping container house.

In this time of house shortage, it is also a solution to look at water as a building space. In Rosneath Peninsula, Scotland, you can find this wonderful shipping container house, overlooking this beautiful Scottish lake. The space is used for residencies to support new art by national and international artists, and as a tourist, you can also stay the night in this place called Cove Park. Fun fact: there is also a rooftop garden on the six metal containers.

Do shipping container homes rust?
A shipping container is a special, non corrosive Corten steel; then, when coated with the Ceramic coating, it becomes virtually rust proof and also prevents mildew, mold and is highly antiseptic. There will be no rust problems if you use an ISBUA Certified Member to build your home or advise you

Only one word comes to mind when you see this architectural masterpiece: WOW! This futuristic design is a concept of London architect James Whitake. This super cool shipping container studio looks quite expensive, but nothing could be further from the truth: the total costs, including permitting, designing, and building, was around 100,000 dollars. This studio in Germany is made out of ten shipping containers that are arranged to direct sunlight into the interior.

Do shipping container homes need a foundation?
With shipping container homes, the concrete piers are generally laid at each corner of the container. Another great reason to use a pier foundation is that other foundations, such as pile foundations, require expensive specialized equipment which can obviously be difficult for DIY builders.

Cross-Shaped Micro Home

Cross shaped shipping container house

A shipping container home in the form of a cross? Yes - this cross-shaped home is designed to be a place to study for members of the church in Tbilisi, Georgia. Because of the placing of two shipping containers vertically and horizontally, this micro home looks like a huge cross. But architect Papuashvili told architecture and design magazine Deezen this layout is not for religious reasons, but practical ones. This cross-shaped micro home is set out to be entirely made out of waste materials and to be self-sufficient.

Shipping container houses are also a great way to reduce construction time. This house in Costa Rica, Casa Incuba, was designed by architect Maria José Trejos. The construction of the containers made it possible to build faster in comparison to a ‘normal’ house. Also cool: this shipping container house was built around an existing tree and was painted with a particular type of paint to protect the building against Costa Rican rain showers.
