Shocked World! No Sustainable News Anymore

shocked world no sustainable news anymore | Breaking News

Did you notice that there are hardly any innovations in renewable energy, transportation, sustainability, and agriculture in the last few years!

Shocked World! No Sustainable News Anymore

Of course, there are plenty of innovations, but they are all variations in developments already here.

What about the solar panels? Yes, they get more efficient, they are getting cheaper but will they power the world? Wind turbines are getting higher, thus generating more electricity. They will be more efficient but will they power the world?
Electric cars? Yes, they get a larger range, and yes, maybe sometimes the batteries will be more efficient and even more environmentally friendly. But where will the electricity come from?

Just to remember, electricity is not an energy source. It needs to be generated by burning something or with solar, or with the wind, or with hydrogen, which is in a blue, green version depending on how clean it is produced!

Yes, what about hydrogen? I like it, and it will be great to power large ships, machines and trucks with it. But still, it needs to be produced, and I really see no innovation yet which will do the trick in such a way that it will be available in abundance cheap way.

Tidal energy is also one of my favorites, but there are only a few places in the world where it works. And thermal energy. Great... on a small scale.

In this chart, we see the breakdown of the global energy mix between fossil fuels and low-carbon energy (which is the sum of nuclear and renewables). From 1970 to 2000, the low-carbon share more than doubled from 6% to 13%. But since the millennium, progress has been slower: in two decades it has increased by only 3 percentage points.

Shocked World: Just Small Scale Agricultural developments

If it is about agriculture, there are all small developments. Vertical farms, food forests, permaculture, roof gardens, etc. This is just a small dent in what the world needs to make a substantial difference.

What are the environmental impacts of food and agriculture?

The visualization here shows a summary of some of the main global impacts:

  • Food accounts for over a quarter (26%) of global greenhouse gas emissions
  • Half of the world’s habitable (ice- and desert-free) land is used for agriculture;
  • 70% of global freshwater withdrawals are used for agriculture
  • 78% of the global ocean and freshwater eutrophication (the pollution of waterways with nutrient-rich pollutants) is caused by agriculture
  • 94% of mammal biomass (excluding humans) is livestock. This means livestock outweighs wild mammals by a factor of 15-to-1. Of the 28,000 species evaluated to be threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List, agriculture and aquaculture is listed as a threat for 24,000 of them

Food, therefore, lies at the heart of trying to tackle climate change, reducing water stress, pollution, restoring lands back to forests or grasslands, and protecting the world’s wildlife

Brings 5G Innovations Joy?

And what about 5 G. is that solving anything? Well, soon, an autonomous car comes up after your mobile call with Uber. You can download faster. O, yeh, we can work more from home, which has shown with the current corona crisis is not always that easy, favorable for children and the combination of adults and children.

Yes, a robot will replace you and do all the boring shitty, repetitive work activities, help your child learn, change diapers from older adults in elderly houses, but will it make us really happy? Is it really a solution? Also, robots need power, need maintenance, have to be built from and with something.

I don’t hear, don’t read about any authoritative organization that comes up with a large-scale innovation that solves our energy crisis.

Technique Versus Behavior

Humanity is looking desperately for technical solutions but should not be a large part of our solutions to find in our behavior? Use less, eat less, use less energy, travel less.

Second Hand: Why Would You Buy Things?

If it is about fashion, many buy second-hand cloth. Vintage it’s named, which feels better! You even can rent something which also gets promoted by many organizations. Rent fashion, a washing machine, tools, etc. Why would you own everything while most of the time your car stays idle in front of your house, your drill machine lays idle on a shelve, your …

It could be part of the solution, even in combination with companies making stuff again which last a lifetime.

Then, let’s also fire all these marketers who try to convince us to buy the ridiculous unhealthy garbage that makes us sick, the world polluted, and our healthcare system overwhelmed. If there is one example that shows our way of living is parasitic unhealthy, it’s COVID-19 and all its variants discovered and on its way.

Long-Distance Connection

I thought this world was about connecting again. But I think I misunderstood. It is indeed about connecting but wireless. By mobile, by computer, by blockchain, by being plugged in but not about real-life sitting next to each other and have a nice conversation.

Please, people, tell me I’m very wrong and show me solutions that are large scale and really help us and nature survive. I’m looking forward to read your comments. I hope I’m so wrong with my worldview.
