The new tool Measure your Food Forest Harvest! (https://voedseluithetbos.nl/en/) measures all these aspects. The tool was presented in a webinar in autumn 2020 and has now (February 2021) a new feature to exchange results. In June 2021, the tool will also be available in English at the International Forest Garden/Food Forest Symposium.

Measuring Food Forest Harvest: 80 Farmers

At the moment, 80 food forest farmers measure their food forest and share their insights with the world.

Food forests are forests that consist of seven layers: from tubers and herbs to shrubs and trees. Some plants are pioneers, such as the nettle, while the walnut tree does not enter a natural system until much later (when the nettle has already left). Food forest systems make use of these natural succession stages so that no human intervention is required. The harvest comes from different layers: from root vegetables to leaves, berries, herbs, and nuts.

Most food forests are located in Noord-Brabant and Gelderland, two parts of the Netherlands in the South and East. Participants make a so-called tree plot (a circle with a radius of 10 meters), counted the number of different plants, dug holes to view the CO2 storage in the soil, count insects in the autumn, and calculate the CO2 storage in wood.

First Results Of Measuring The Harvest

Initial measurements show that the number of species differs greatly. Some people find more than 50 spice varieties on their plot. Others find fewer than five species, separate from grass, ferns, and moss. Most food forests are also only 1 or 2 years old. Among the species found are several red list species.

Harvest’s Relevant Data

Researcher Jeroen Schütt of Wageningen University and Research: “It is special that red list species are found. Such as the "normal" agrimony, which is therefore no longer so ordinary. We will still check this based on photos.”

Schütt is positive about the potential of food forests for rare species. “It is nice to see that rare species apparently get a chance here. If so many people participate in measuring food forest harvests, the collected data becomes super relevant. We can all benefit from it if we gain insight into the structure of biodiversity, soil life, and CO2 storage in food forests. It is useful and fun for owners to monitor their own food forest and compare their own forest with other food forests in the system.”

Lobby And Community

Project leader Marieke Karssen of The Plant: “The great interest indicates that there is a need for the tool. We see many applications from food forest owners and forest groups, nature managers, and the agricultural sector. We are delighted with this because food forests can bring nature and agriculture closer together while addressing the food, climate, and biodiversity crises. In a follow-up project, we want to answer the need for community formation and lobbying power. We invite everyone to participate. ”
